The Fringe

Cape Town, SA, 2012

Client: Cape Town Partnership

Guy Briggs | USPD was commissioned by Cape Town Partnership, with the City of Cape Town, to prepare an urban design framework for The Fringe, Cape Town’s emerging innovation and creative quarter in the East City.

The Fringe lies in the area where the CBD meets District 6 – an area cleared of its original residents by the apartheid government in the 1960s, 70s and 80s, to create a ‘whites only’ residential area. Due to enormous local and international pressure, very little development took place, and District 6 has remained largely derelict to this day. Development is now taking place, allowing former residents to return, and The Fringe will become a vibrant creative interface between the newly re-established District 6 and the city.

The urban design framework establishes the vision and character for The Fringe; identifies objectives and principles; sets out the spatial parameters for future development in the area, including strategies for the public realm, built form, movement and connectivity; and defines a number of projects to deliver a coherent environment to suit the area’s emerging and future uses.
